Basic Tips to Build a Modeling Portfolio: Beginner Guide

Posted on 24.03.2026

A strong modeling portfolio is your first impression in the fashion industry. Whether you’re applying to modeling agencies or working freelance, these essential tips will help you create a professional model book.

1. Quality over quantity

Always prioritize quality over quantity. It is enough to have the minimum number of strong pictures to attract the right client and/or get noticed by agencies.

And sometimes, having too many photos may work against you: if the pictures aren’t “strong” and clearly show that you’re not confident in front of the camera, don’t have much experience, etc., the client may decide to book another model, even if they liked your visual appearance.

I’ve been running many castings lately while doing full production for brands, and I will be honest with you: I’d rather book a model who knows how to present herself and has a lot of experience, rather than an aspiring model who looks absolutely amazing, yet doesn’t know how to present herself in front of the camera due to a lack of experience and posing skills. The thing is: time is money, and unless the client is absolutely sure you can work properly, they won’t book you.

And your portfolio shows your skills, your professionalism – it is your everything.

So, always choose quality over quantity – you don’t need to show 50–100 photos and make the client feel lost…

If you’re at the beginning of your career, start with 10–15 strong images that highlight:

– Your facial features
– Your body proportions
– Your versatility

2. Start with simple, natural photos

Make sure to have some clean, minimal images in your portfolio so the client can easily understand your visual appearance.

Include:
– Headshot (most natural look, no heavy makeup)
– Full-body shot
– Profile angles

Later on, you will be adding more pictures to your book; however, you will always need to have at least a few very natural, simple shots of yourself.

3. Variety is the key

It is really important to include different styles of photos in your portfolio:

– Fashion/editorial
– Commercial/lifestyle
– Simple studio shots

This helps clients and agencies understand your potential across markets.

I’ve shared more specific tips in this video of mine, which I highly recommend you watch. I filmed it a while ago, yet it is 100% accurate for the current situation in the modeling market, so watch it first:

4. Invest in Test Shoots

You need to have high-quality images in your portfolio – casual selfies won’t meet industry standards.

My advice would be to start your career by investing in good pictures! Work with industry professionals. Good pictures taken by a professional who knows the market well will speed up your career development and open more doors. And you will easily return your investment once you start earning money from getting booked.

If you’re building a portfolio by yourself without an agency’s guidance, this video will help you plan everything, as I’m sharing exactly which pictures you need to have in your book, in what order the images should be placed, mistakes to avoid, etc.

It is your choice whether to try finding free collaborations / doing TFP shoots or investing in a high-quality shoot with a professional photographer.

Either way, be smart about who you are working with and don’t agree to every collaboration / free shoot. If you’re a beginner, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t prioritize good quality. TFP shoots aren’t always the best choice, but if you need more experience in front of the camera and have some time, go for it!

Important thing: make sure the person you work with is trustworthy. Your safety always comes first!

When you book me and my team for a test shoot and/or modeling portfolio shoot, we not only capture you in the best possible way, but also think about your career development:

  • What to add to your current book to boost your career?
  • Which photos will make you stand out and be in high demand as a professional model?
  • How can we present you so you can get more bookings for certain jobs, etc.?

It’s important to fill the existing “gaps” in your portfolio and be smart when building a model’s book from zero as well.

5. Keep It Updated

Replace weaker photos as you improve. Your portfolio should evolve with your experience, skills, and look.

You don’t need a perfect portfolio to start modeling — you just need to be strategic.
With consistency and updates, you will achieve your goals soon enough!

Be smart about your career, and you will get quicker and more efficient results; your investments will pay off as well.
